Result: LX 4 Ashford 1
After the heavy rain on Saturday everyone was delighted to see bright sunshine for this annual fixture. In the weeks leading up to the fixture there had been a doubt about whether LX would be able to field a team. However, another chasing email from the Club Captain had the desired result and, in the end, 14 LX members turned out to play much to the relief of Keith Hedley (Match Manager) and Richard Slator (Team Captain).
LX started in fine style and very quickly established themselves in the opposition half with some quick passing and plenty of running up front from John Wiseman, Andy Bland (a new member) and Jon Beale. The pressure eventually led to a scoring opportunity for Richard Slator who managed to push the ball wide of the post. This was then followed by further attacks and then John Wiseman showed exactly how it should be done!
LX won a number of penalty corners and it was from one of these that the initial strike was saved by the Ashford keeper with the ball rebounding off his pads into the air. An advancing Jon Beale then carefully and gleefully struck the aerial ball into the net. Continued attacks led to another opportunity for Richard Slator who, this time, made sure that the ball went the correct side of the post.
Although LX were in dominance for the majority of the first half Ashford did managed to find their way into the LX half on occasions. One of these attacks led to Ashford wining a penalty corner which was nicely taken and struck. Unfortunately, the defending runner, Tony Rutherford, managed to get his stick to the ball but rather than stopping it the ball deflected into the air giving John Ingram-Marriott no chance to save it.
Half time arrived with LX 3‑1 up and, essentially, in control.
The second half was a more balanced affair with Attacks coming from both teams but, on balance, LX remained in control. However, the LX defence of Davids West & Holgate and Mike Patton had more to do in terms of defending than in the first half and Graham (Harry) Ramsden having to make some long runs in order to make the final clearance. The LX mid-field of Mike Rudd, Mandeep Hansra, Raj Bharij, Ian Knox and Richard Slator continued to put in the leg work to maintain control of the mid-field though not as dominant as they had been in the first half. From another attacking move Richard Slator scored his second goal in almost exactly the same manner as the goal in the first half receiving a well weighted pass from John Wiseman which totally isolated the Ashford keeper.
The game then finished with a good result for LX and a game played very much in the correct spirit and enjoyed by all. The two teams were then able to sit down and enjoy a fine 3 course lunch prepared and served from the club’s kitchen. Thanks must go to Keith Hedley for managing the fixture on behalf of LX and to those members who turned out to represent the club, in particular, Andy Bland and John Wiseman who made the 4hr drive from the West country to be there.
