Grand Masters Hockey European Cup 2011- Neuss, Germany.

 ENGLAND GREAT GRAND MASTERS

Day 1  Monday 22nd August 2011

England GGMv  Holland  0

The GGMs started their European Cup campaign with a hard fought draw against one of the pre-tournament favourites. Both defences were generally on top with midfield being tightly contested. The better chances fell to the Dutch and we were grateful to Paddy Maher who pulled off some fine saves. We were never able to impose our usual pattern of play and there was rather a stalemate in midfield. Penalty corners were in short supply for both sides and in the end a well earned draw was a fair result

Day 2 Tuesday 23rd August 2011

England GGM  9  v  Scotland  0

After a draw against Holland a good result was required in this match. Fortunately early goals from Norman Ballard and Stephen Stowell settled the nerves and although straightforward chances were missed short corner moves resulted in goals from Neil Major and Mike Surridge to give us a 4-0 lead at half time. Constant pressure on the Scottish defence together with good passing moves created a considerable number of goal scoring opportunities which were taken by Stephen Stowell on 3 more occasions Norman Ballard and Mike Surridge. All in all a comfortable victory and a crowd pleasing performance.

Day 3 Wednesday 24th August 2011

Day off.

Day 4 Thursday 25th August 2011

England GGM  6  v Germany  2

An impressive first half performance with a 100% penalty corner conversion rate saw England 4-0 up at half time. Four different variations resulted in goals from John Maylam, Brian Perryman and Neil Major(2).Unfortunately we were unable to maintain the level of play and passing movements allowing Germany back into the game. A fine penalty stroke save by Paddy Maher maintained our advantage temporarily but he had no chance of preventing the two German goals. We restored our 4 goal lead with goals from Ray Jeff and Gordon Small. Again a comfortable victory in the end but the second half performance was rather disappointing.

Day 5 Friday 26th August 2011

England GGM  12  v Italy  0

A comprehensive demolition of the Italian side secured the gold medal on goal difference from Holland. An explosive start saw us go 2-0 up in 2 minutes with goals from Norman Ballard and Gordon Small following smooth and free flowing passing. More of the same resulted in goals from Stephen Stowell(3) John Maylam and Adrian Stephenson and a 7-0 lead at half time. Further constant pressure with Paddy Maher a mere spectator in goal led to further goals from Ken Wilcock(2)on his final international appearance for the GGMs,Stephen Stowell, Mike Surridge and Jim Tranter.

Overall the squad thoroughly deserved its gold medal, improving with every game during the tournament.
