LX CLUB v IPSWICH HC

Sunday 20th April 2008

LX Club 2  -  Ipswich 1

A good competitive game played in an excellent spirit and resulted in the end with a deserved win for the LX side.   Due to a number of absentees from the main “A” squad, other hockey commitments and injuries, the side were left with no full backs leaving Terry Howlett and John Maylam to fill the breach, which they ably did.     With a limited number of other positional changes the side settled quickly and had the better of the early exchanges, but Ipswich with some strong runs from midfield and quick passing soon were creating their own chances and the game swung from one end to the other.  Although LX made a number of good penetrations of the home team’s circle they gained no reward, while at the other end Colin Kimber had to bring off two excellent saves.   However, the deadlock was finally broken ten minutes before half time when Ipswich scored a well taken goal following a free hit from just outside the circle.

The second half saw LX pick up the pace of the game and for most of this period had the upper hand.

Using shorter and quicker passing LX created a number of chances and got the Ipswich defence turned on many occasions.  Mike Surridge moved to the right wing for the second half and he linked well with Brian Perryman.   This partnership provided some good ball for Lloyd Wood and John French who created considerable problems in the host’s circle and won a number of short corners.    From these short corners Mike Surridge scored the first goal and Imtiaz Mahmood converted the second and thereby secured the teams win.

Perryman and Ray Jeff worked extremely hard in midfield throughout and Norman Ballard supported them well.    Neil Major and Mike Harris the two wing halves were able to push up and gave good support to the forwards, particularly in the second half, while still providing good defence cover.

Our many thanks to John Gordon for organising this fixture and for the excellent spread he provided after the game.
