LX Club v Pistons

at Southgate on 18th May 2006

Trent Park proved to be a welcome oasis for LX players who had been marooned on the M25.  The pattern of play was quickly established with fluent passing and running off the ball from LX and it was no surprise when after a sweeping move Graham Martin rifled the ball high into the Pistons’ goal to establish an early lead.  Pistons (with LX-er Nigel Spencer-Knott patrolling the midfield with his usual acumen) did not take long to equal the score with their best move of the match but some fine inter-passing down the left between David Gill and Stephen Stowell resulted in the former putting LX 2-1 up at halftime.

Brian Woolcott’s half-time team talk roused the side into a trance-like state in which an early goal was conceded in the second half after several defenders had failed to clear the lines.  However, the lead was quickly re-established when following a flowing passing movement Gerald Wilkinson beat the Pistons’ goalie with a trade-mark cross-shot from the edge of the circle.  Minutes later came the turning point of the match with Mike Surridge making a fine goal-line save.  This seemed to galvanise the LX side and to take the heart out of the opposition. For the last few minutes it was one-way traffic with David Wright scoring from a short corner and Stephen Stowell rounding off yet another fine move to enable LX to run out worthy 5-2 winners.

Our thanks to Pistons for providing both umpires and for their after-match hospitality.
