LX v Spencer
A SPICY EVENING IN SOUTH LONDON on 30th June 2016
LX 1 SPENCER 2
This was an inaugural evening match against Spencer near Tooting – citizen Smith territory!
A dull windy ‘summer’ evening produced a fine game played in great masters spirit on a Spencer pitch which is being replaced on 11th July after 10 years. We turned out a grandmasters team whilst Spencer had a slightly younger outfit boasting most of their team that finished runners up in both the London League over 50 and over 60 leagues. It was great to see Max Hamber back playing after his stroke earlier in the year and he came through the game with no issues. Well done Max ! We were delighted to have the services of England over 65 captain Clive Hicks who had an influential game at centre half. In fact our goal was scored by Max Jason from Clive’s sublime pass after his sexy solo run from half way line! Spencer had the ‘legs’ in midfield that kept us all busy throughout. Our man of the match was Roger Girling who kept their dangerous top scoring left winger in check throughout the game. Henrick also was tenacious in our defence as was Gavin. We turned round 1 – 0 up with our goal keeper Laurence having made some fine saves. Last Month Laurence was nominated to join LX club, he is being assessed and today’s performance did him no harm!
We fought hard in the 2nd half with Robin Mayes and Tony D’Souza working hard in midfield with Gordon Small leading the line well for us. Spencer scored two fine goals from open play when they opened us up, their second was a one two between the Bhurij brothers, with elder brother Avtar scoring (1972 Olympian with Uganda). We nearly equalised twice once when Gordon just shot inches wide and when Tochi executed a fine dummy on top of the circle and fired a thunderbolt which bought a ‘toe tip’ save from their keeper. Thanks to players who travelled from afar for this evening game for example Winston from Exeter.
The highlight of the evening was the famous and delicious Spencer curry meal cooked by Spencer hockey playing chefs who excel at it. It will good to have this evening LX game in south London to compliment the one in north London against the Pistons.Report by Tochi Panesar
