LX v ROYAL NAVY
18th Sept. 2016
I am told by Jon Marshall that this is one of the most popular fixtures in our calendar. This was certainly the case this year and I apologise again for having to disappoint so many. There are many reasons why this fixture is so popular; great facilities at the United Services Ground in Portsmouth, challenging opposition, excellent post match hospitality. This year, to add to all that, we were blessed with warm, sunny, late summer weather.
We always approach this fixture knowing that the Navy side will be younger and fitter than us. This was certainly the case this year and from the outset LX found it difficult to cope with the Navy pace and energy. The defence, composed of Stones, German Singh, Kjellin, Guppy and Lucas had to work hard to keep the opposition at bay.The Navy pressure produced a number of short corners that were saved by the great reactions of Eric Best in goal. At this stage of the game, LX chances came as the result of breakaways. The best of them fell to Dickie Croker, making his LX debut, who narrowly failed to connect with a cross from Santa Bansal.
As the game settled down, LX became more familiar with the line up and gradually the midfield of Graham Jackson, Sarosh Talati and Balbir Singh began to exert greater control. This provided a platform to bring our wide attackers, Zahid Arain and Pammy Bolina, into play. The Navy, however, continued to press and finally opened the scoring from a penalty corner.
In the second half, LX changed from three in midfield to four. This seemed to increase our share of possession and our goal scoring opportunities. It was the LX turn to secure a string of short corners that resulted in Santa Bansal levelling the score with one of his trade mark power shots. Shortly after, he scored a second penalty corner, this time from the rebound of his first shot that came back to him off a post.
Having lost this in this fixture for the last to years this was a very pleasing result. I am very grateful to the whole squad for the effort they made and for their support. I would also like to express my thanks to Ken Veness who, as usual, made a great job of the umpiring. Finally, thanks to Dickie Croker for providing the photographs.
