Bowden Weekend

1st to 3rd July 2016

An introduction to Bowden Weekend

The Bowdon weekend 2016-a happy punter-Go for it in 2017

I had previously  attended the Bowdon weekend and always thoroughly enjoyed it , with the splendid dinner in the Cricket club’s traditional pavilion , the hotel ( a good price) close by the quality pitch at Bowdon for some excellent hockey   on the Saturday  before the Sunday morning trip to Deeside  for well organised competitive hockey and a  nice casual buffet.

However I couldn’t go last year so it was all quite new to me concerning the  innovations of Golf on the Friday and Tennis on the Saturday morning . I can’t report  on the Golf but I understand that it is certainly popular.  Under the ‘positive  take it on board’ overall management of Martin Ferrett  Angus and Gillian Brogdon are the leading lights concerning these innovations. I took part in the tennis along with David Bain, Lesley Martin, Tony Taig and Angus and we kept having short tie breaks !( games at 2-2 ) and David and I were delighted to be presented with nice Italian red  wine at the dinner in the evening.

Next the afternoon after a lovely snack lunch at the Brogdons- an inch away from the Sports centre then a short walk to Bowdon Hockey Club , into hockey gear  – ‘Get the body in shape Read’ – looking round there’s German 69 , me 70 and the rest are early 60s, and they are warming up vigorously . ‘Read you are going to have to perform’, but LXs impressive captain ,   Jeff Jackson , soon made me feel at ease and playing  with these younger  guys was an absolute pleasure ( a few I had met socially at Tilsburg) playing high quality hockey V a strong Old Wulfs and Guests side ( a 1-1 draw) . I did manage to cope and the team members were very complimentary afterwards , doubting my advanced age which is always nice !  Next the later match a 4-1 win for another LX side against a Bowdon side .

The Dinner is a really sociable evening and then in the morning it’s a hearty breakfast and off to Deeside . But do we know where you are going . It’s not far if you don’t get lost , but one year I made the big mistake of following Frank Hardy who got us very lost ! We just got there in time for the start.

I do thank Martin for all his hard work, with his helpers, and I certainly recommend the weekend. It was particularly praiseworthy as the Home international were going on at the same time.

It would be good to dig out more Golfers and Tennis players . Perhaps a mention in the newsletter and a key in the handbook , just add T and/or G.

Saturday July 2nd.

LX 1    Old Wulfs 1

The LX team faced an experienced and well organised opposition. Jeff Jackson captained a strong LX squad. LX started strongly with several early attacks, but without ant success. As the Old Wulfs settled they grew in confidence and took the lead after 16 mins. Both teams missed opportunities and good defending kept the score at 1-0 at the interval. The second half produced more flowing hockey, but both teams still found it hard to score. With ten minutes left the LX equalised with a follow up from a short corner from the lively Paul Dallas. It was a very enjoyable close game.

LX 4    Bowdon 1

The second game v Bowdon was another very even game although the score line might not suggest this. The game flowed from end to end with many chances being created. The LX took their chances with Graham Martin, through excellent positioning and delicate touches, scoring a hat trick and Tony Taig getting the other. The Bowdon defence was very sound with good goalkeeping from Martin Ferrett. This was another very enjoyable game.

Sunday 3rd July

LX  1  Deeside Ramblers 2

Having been wined and dined the night before at Bowdon Hockey Club, the LX team set off at a reasonable time Sunday morning to play Deeside Ramblers.

We were greeted by sunny weather and a strong Deeside squad of 15 players.  However with the captain’s (MartinFerrett) encouragement to score more goals than the opposition we made a promising start having the best of the opening exchanges. Our midfield of Paul Dallas, Paul Bateson, Graham Small and John Stone had to work hard to contain a lively and youthful Deeside midfield whilst our defence of Tony Neeve, David, Peter and Graham Ramsden held strong to keep the opposition out.

It was Deeside who took the lead following a surging run by their main midfield player who neatly passed the ball wide of our keeper for a simple finish into an empty net.  The LX response was positive, with excellent movement amongst the forwards of Tony Taig, Martin Hall and John Housham creating an opportunity for John to equalize following a break through the middle from Paul Dallas.

With opportunities being created at both ends it was again Deeside who took the lead with a well taken goal midway through the second half. LX continued to press right to the end for an equalizer and had two or three good opportunities to score. However the game ended 2-1 to Deeside and we retired to the clubhouse for Deeside’s generous hospitality to end a very enjoyable Hotego weekend.
