LX Club v Oxted Moonshiners
at Oxted on 12th July 2015
In spite of having to contend with a charity pram race in Oxted that very same afternoon the annual LX v Oxted fixture got off to a pretty punctual start. Right from the off it became apparent that the introduction of a few young legs into the LX side especially those belonging to Ian Knox at right mid-field were going to cause Oxted problems . Furthermore there was a solid central core to the visiting side provided by John Ingram-Marriott in goal ( after his battle with the motorway system), Gavin Stones at sweeper, David West at centre back, Brian Perryman at central mid-field & last, but certainly not least, Anthony d'Souza at central striker. It was not therefore unexpected when only a few minutes into the game Anthony scored a fine goal to show LX's intent & thereafter LX continued on the front foot. A good move down the right saw the ball fired out to Tony Jones down the right flank . Tony dragged the ball back to Robin Mayes whose pin point strike into the dee found the predatory Ian Knox unmarked & Ian made no mistake in burying the ball in the back of the net. Not to be denied the left hand LX flank proved to be just as dangerous with good interplay between Nigel Guppy, Mike Sprange & Tochi Panesar seeing the latter hit a beautiful shot which whistled past the right hand goal post.
In spite of a half-time team talk when the captain urged against complacency & not letting Oxted back into the game, LX allowed Oxted to have the best period of the game at the beginning of the second half. Only some timely interceptions by Messrs. Stones, Guppy & Perryman with a save or two by the ever youthful I-M kept the younger oppo at bay. It was with some relief that a wayward pass from an Oxted player found Chris Thornhill hovering just inside the Oxted half. Chris sprang into life like a young gazelle, rounded half the opposition defence before striking home a splendid goal past the stranded Oxted keeper. Anthony d'Souza was then presented with an easy task to slot the ball home from close in for a 4-0 lead . Shortly before the end Brian Perryman had the chance to make it 5 from the penalty flick spot but his well taken stroke rebounded back from the left hand post.
At last therefore after a hugely enjoyable match LX were able to recors a win against the might of Oxted but there is little doubt that our opponents will be out to avenge this defeat next year.
Our special thanks go to LX member Rainer Vogt who as always gathered together his Oxted troops & for the always generous post match Oxted hospitality .
