LX v Ipswich & District Masters

28 June 2015

The Suffolk skies (shame they were cloudy), the smell of the countryside, the lure of the coast, a game of hockey amongst like minded players, a nice meal, throw in goalkeeping stalwarts Johnny Gordon and John Steward amongst the throngs of supporters and you have the makings of a lovely day out.

So it proved.

LX won this fixture in 2014 by 4-3 and started this game by dominating possession with some fine inter passing. Gerald Wilkinson was finding plenty of space on the right wing and with John Grinham offering plenty of support down that flank, the early money was certainly on a repeat win.

Chris Thornhill and Johnny Briggs (guest ) were proving lively up front and so it proved quite a surprise when Peter Glading , the Ipswich goal poacher, slotted the ball past Cliff Peck to put Ipswich one up. Cliff soon put the record straight however with a superb save from the same player.

There was no further score before half time and all was still to play for when the sides turned round.

Indeed, Ipswich went further ahead when Graham Ramsden thrashed home after his first effort had been well blocked  by Cliff Peck. Ipswich were now getting on top with their more incisive play contrasting with the patient build up of LX.

Graham Wood was making sorties forward to add some more impetus to LX attacks but it was Ipswich who scored again when following a flowing  move, Mark Hollingsworth scored with the most delicate of touches.

Chris Thornhill slotted home with a well taken shot to bring LX back into the game but it was too little too late and Peter Glading completed the scoring for Ipswich finishing off a move started by Mike Surridge.

The final score of 4-1 didn’t do justice to the competitiveness of the match and although Ipswich arguably had the edge in the circles , there was much less between the 2 teams than the score line might suggest.

As ever the game was very well umpired by Nick Meakin and Barry Anderson and by the time chef Darius had made sure everybody was well fed and watered, the sun came out.
