LX ENGLAND ANNUAL TOUR TO JERSEY
9/10 MAY 2015
Our weekend got underway with a lively evening at the Veccio Milano restaurant arranged by our island hosts, Tim and June Pollard. Unfortunately, due to a flight delay the Spencer-Knotts and Howards missed it, but we made sure they knew we had a great evening!
Saturday was perfect hockey weather and with a squad well briefed and organised by Captain Brian Stoke we took to the field on the very smart new Jersey pitch. We were looking in good form when Tochi Panesar scored a very fine goal from a short corner. Shortly afterwards things were evened up when we conceded a rather soft goal. Jerseys second goal was the result of a fine individual run culminating in a superb shot into the corner of the goal. The game continued very competitively then disappointingly a third rather soft goal was conceded. LX were denied a second goal with a superb tip of the toe save from our host Tim, he was deservedly pleased. Despite the score it was a very competitive and hard fought game.
Our 'special' dinner on Saturday evening at The Moorings Hotel in Gorey, once again lived up to expectations. Beautiful food, wonderfully presented and of course accompanied by fine wine. We were joined by several of our Jersey opposition who all helped to add to the great atmosphere of the evening.
Sunday morning saw us back at the pitch for a 10.30 start. Once again a truly competitive affair, real end to end stuff with both teams having opportunities to score. Jersey got in first with a very fine goal. Shortly after half time they scored again but then the impetus changed and LX had several opportunities to score, one of which was rewarded when Graham Martin 'drifted' past the Jersey defenders and unleashed a shot into the top right hand corner, it certainly made his weekend! Celebratory drinks and pizzas outside in the sunshine at the local pub rounded off the morning.
The final social event of the weekend was a curry and lasagne supper at our hosts home. For those who hadn't visited before an undoubted highlight of the evening was a visit to Tims model railway, which has to be seen to be believed. Graham gave a short thank you speech and we presented Tim and June with gifts as a thank you for all their organising and exceptionally generous hospitality. All in all an extremely successful weekend with, despite the age difference, very competitive hockey matches played in ideal conditions and rounded off with extremely enjoyable social events.
