The North Select XI were on top at the start and a slipped short corner was saved but injector Chris Hills converted the rebound. LX were then caught dribbling the ball out of their half and John Ridings made his way unchallenged into the D and struck the ball past the stranded Alan Dures.

LX then started to exert themselves and their first short corner was also slipped left and thrashed into the bottom corner by captain Denison. This was all in the first 8 minutes.

There was end to activity with one particularly good goal line clearance from Martin Codina from a Ray Jeff Shot contributed to keeping the score to still 2-1 at half time.

Ten minutes into the second half there was a once in a life time experience when Richard Yardley was making ground and spotted Roger Lomas cutting in from the left wing and PASSED the ball. The ball was controlled and cracked into the right hand corner to put North Select 3-1 up. This was the first pass from Richard  for a Roger Lomas goal after 45 years of playing together. About the third pas actually.

This is girded the LX team into action and Alastair Robertson , Trevor Denison and Ray Jeff started to create space and from a resultant short corner Graham Martin passed the ball back to the injector and Rod Cochrane slipped the ball in from an acute angle.

Just to prove this was not a fluke an open play move down the right was again slipped left for a carbon copy finish from Rod. And just to prove that lightening can strike three times Graham Martin again slipped the ball left after a move down the right and Rod completed his hat trick in the space of 10 minutes.

North Select then mounted a number of attacks but lacked the finishing touch with Alan Dures secure in goal  and apart from one short corner which was slipped right and a goal bound shot from Richard Yardley was expertly deflected by David (south) Read. North select went all out for the equaliser and left themselves a bit stretched at the back but with only a few minutes left a gap appeared and a pass from Ray Jeff found Graham Martin one on one with Martin Ferret in the North select goal and Graham coolly slotted home to confirm the LX win.

The two teams were well balanced with five over 70s in the LX team being well complemented by over 60s and 65s. The average age of both sides was over 65.

The two umpires from Sheffield and Rotherham let the game flow and everyone really enjoyed the game, which is what it is all about.

We all retired for a late Sunday lunch with 16 wives , partners or guests and a good time was had by all.
