‘Blue Skies and Sun at Reading

LX Club 2 – 4 Reading Vets

The weather was beautiful, if a shade too hot, but the excellent facilities and water-based pitch at the Sonning location encouraged all to consider how nice hockey can be in these summery conditions.

The LX team got off to a ‘not uncommon’ shaky start, and Barry Sewell was soon in action, tipping a tremendous shot over his bar.  Reading went quickly ahead when a shot rebounded off a post and was slotted in by Tony Levin, returning to the team after recovery from a kidney donation to his daughter in January.  After this, spurred on by Captain Brian Perryman, the defence, with John Longden and Brian Tubb getting to grips with the eager Reading forwards, enabled Bob Grenside and Mike Surridge to weave away upfront, together with Parmjit Bolina having a superb first half in the left wing, with good skill.  LX equalised when a Rod Cochrane shot came back off a Reading post, and Mike Surridge scored with confidence.  It was unfortunate that Mike then tweaked a hamstring and could not take any further part in the game.

At the LX goal end, Adrian Robertson thundered one of penalty corner hits onto a post so hard, that paint and shards of plastic flew in all directions!  Sudesh Nayar changed to centre forward, and Adrian Money came to left half, playing with his usual skilful control.  LX went 2-1 ahead when Austyn Leaverland combined well with Brian Perryman and Rod Cochrane glided onto the pass.

Whatever it was that Reading drank at half-time, it certainly energised them, and with a fine Keith Hunt dribble and run along the goal line and passing back to the circle centre, Tony Levin once more gave Barry Sewell no chance.  Reading’s third goal came when a crossed interception rebounded to the centre forward, and the scoring was complete when the home team were correctly awarded a penalty stroke, converted by Fergus Stapleton.

The day was completed by some superb hospitality from Reading, and Keith Hunt, the Match Manager, was very warmly thanked by Brian Perryman for the outstanding arrangements.  Many thanks go to Dave and Judy Robson for their fine umpiring, and it was good to see John Miller amongst the spectators, well recovered from his knee operation, and acknowledgement is made to all the wives who came along to support.  LX Club hopes to return next year to enjoy a similar game.
