LX Inter Club Match
at Olton on 27th
This was a new fixture for the LX club, and as the players took to the pitch,
the sun came out, and so did the supporting wives from the clubhouse.
those who volunteered attendance got as much hockey as they seemed to want, as
the final number came out at 25 players --and 9 wives.
As manager, I tried to
pick equal teams, looking for an honourable draw, but after 5 minutes, the silky
skills of Greg Hutchings for the whites became all too apparent, and ably
supported in midfield by Bob Grenside and Peter Danson, started to develop a
great understanding and some dominance.
At this stage I could not get odds
through online betting for a whites win, but I took a punt on Michael Sprange at
a generous 500/1 getting a brace, and was thankfully richly rewarded. Keith Hunt
also scored for the whites. George Johnson got a consolation for the reds, to
give a final score of 3-1 to the whites.
The weather was spot on, the pitch
played well, the quality of hockey was excellent and very competitive and in
fairness quite equally balanced, and the club put on a great 2 course lunch for
the players and wives in the splendid clubhouse.
A thoroughly enjoyable day.
I must say I found organising this event totally stress free, and my thanks to
the captains, Ray Jeff and Malcolm Kemble, the umpires Ian Marsh and Ian Major (
from Olton) with Ben Rea in reserve, to the support of LX, particularly George
Hazell and both David Reads, and for many of participants travelling great
distances to support this event.
Those players in attendance were :-
Clarke, Cochrane, Danson, Grace, Grenside, Hunt, Hutchings, Jeff, Johnson,
Kemble, Lomas, Mack, Mellor, Money, Pearce, Perryman ( Tony), Pinks, Purshouse,
Read, Singh, Sprange, Stephenson, Glyn Thomas (Wales), Wildee and Woolcott.
