‘No signs of a drought of rain or goals in Hampshire’

Result:  LX 3  -  Havant Cavaliers 4

Following recent drought warnings in this Country, the LX club team assembled in heavy wind-blown rain to play the first of two traditional fixtures this year against the Havant Cavaliers.

Before the game, Rod Cochrane made a presentation to Parmjit (Pami) Bolina of the tournament medal which the latter won at Athens.

LX started with a 3-3-4 formation, which was based on the available players; this was defensively very sound, with Alan Jackson and John Longden at their best.  However, this stretched the midfield trio of Brian Tubb, Brian Perryman and Sudesh Nayar, who performed magnificently in the circumstances.  The team took an early 1-0 lead, when Rod Cochrane scored an early goal, following several previous shots.  Tom Darlington, on the left wing, contributed some nice touches and was always available at Havant’s right post to grasp any goal scoring opportunities. Havant did eventually score, when Nigel Guppy,  who was a constant threat throughout the whole game with his powerful penalty corner strikes, had one such shot parried  away, but Havant scored from the rebound, to make the score 1-1 at half-time.

Following the break, with the rain pouring down, a good run by Bob Grenside on the right wing gave Pami Bolina the opportunity to make an intricate run across the pitch to score superbly into the corner of Havant’s goal.  The LX team then switched to 2-3-5 with the intention of giving the forwards more opportunities.  However, the lead was short-lived as Nigel Guppy for the home team fired in yet another of his powerful penalty corner shots, and although initially this was saved on the line, it was not cleared well enough, and the second shot found the goal to even the score to 2-2.

Havant continue to pressurise the LX defence and John Gledhill scored a brilliant goal, after a run from the half-way line, when he dribbled past three LX defenders and completed a brilliant effort with a delicately placed lob over the advancing Alan Dures.  LX immediately struck back with an interesting goal from Pami Bolina with a spinning shot to level the score to 3-3.  However, the game culminated with a 4-3 win to Havant, when a right wing cross evaded the LX defence and was deftly drilled home by an opposition’s forward.

An excellent meal followed in the Havant Clubhouse, and thanks were given to John and Mary Davey.  It should also be mentioned that John has been arranging this fixture, twice a year, for over a decade now, and the Club warmly thanks him for this work, and Mary for all the steak pies produced and enjoyed at all the after-match hospitalities.
