LX CLUB  at 60th Blackpool Easter Hockey Festival (23 April 2011)

On my 26th and last year as organiser of the Blackpool Hockey Festival, it was great to include a super-vets section for the first time on this Diamond Jubilee occasion.

Over the 4 days, there were the usual 50 teams of Men, Women and Mixed, but on the Saturday the LXERS played double round-robin matches against the LAKELANDERS (from Cumbria) and the LIKELY LADS (from the North East and Yorkshire).
After playing 4 matches and 2 hours of hockey in sunny, hot conditions,, the strong LX team came out winners, having beaten the Likely Lads twice and with a better goal difference than the Lakelanders who they drew with twice.
Alan Dures made many fine saves as GK, Mike Surridge was very strong as sweeper with guest Zahid Arain formidable at centre-back, and they were ably supported by Harbhajan Singh and Bob Jameson at full-backs.

The midfield of Bob Purshouse, Ray Jeff and Peter Danson worked well together, forming a platform for attack for the forward trio of Pami Bolina, Graham Martin and Bill Warrender who created lots of goal scoring chances.
In the first 2-2 draw, Pami picked up a pass from Bob P, then beat two defenders before scoring low to the Gk's left, and man-of-the-match Mike rushed up the pitch to flick in at a short corner, the first of his three goals in the tournament.
The second match was 2-0 with Zahid striking home a short corner and Pami scoring from the narrowest of angles following a reverse pass by Peter.
Another tough 0-0 game preceded the last match, again a 2-0 win, in which Mike completed his hat-trick, again from two shorts corners. Short passes from Bob P, the injector, to Bill, back to Bob P, then to Mike on the penalty spot, who mesmerised the defence before flicking in from close range, and the Likely Lads were rightly annoyed with themselves when exactly the same routine was repeated minutes later.

Tournament Results.

All teams enjoyed the atmosphere of the festival and are looking forward to a similar venture again; also are the wives who were watching from deck-chairs on the side of the astro.

A goal must just have been scored!
