LX Mid Week Tour to Northumberland.
Border Reivers 4 v. LX 1
LX under a cloud !
After lengthy drives through the north eastern mist, LX took to the field full of enthusiasm and were straight into the attack. Reivers defence was sound and they were soon able to mount attacks of their own. David Ewing at sweeper, Mike Patton, Bill Pickersgill and David Read were all fully occupied in dealing with a succession of raids as the Reivers began to pick up their rhythm. With LX struggling to establish some control over the midfield, Reivers moved into the lead following a penalty corner. A slip to the right provided the opportunity to lay the ball across goal and past Alan Dures. Making good use of their two pacy wingers, Reivers continued to apply pressure and LX went further behind following another penalty corner when the strike at goal was off target but a sharp deflection by an alert winger doubled the advantage. With half time approaching, LX began to put together longer sequences of possession with Ted Hayes and John Land using the wings to good advantage and creating a greater threat to the Reivers goal.
Opening the second half with Mike Patton and Ray Jeff policing the danger men more closely, LX were making their presence felt. Ball retention was also better and from a sweeping move from the midfield, Ray Jeff’s delivery into the ‘D’ was collected by Bill Warrender and flicked past the ‘keeper. Lifted by this success, LX endeavoured to maintain the pressure, but as time wore on, Reivers began to reassert their youthful authority and restored the advantage from yet another short corner strike. With time running out and the effort beginning to take it’s toll, LX were unable to hold the scoreline and Reivers added a fourth before the final whistle.
Border Reivers 2 v LX 3
And into the sunshine!
Refreshed after a nights rest and reinforced with the presence of Angus Brogden, LX took to the field looking to take revenge for the previous days defeat. With the early exchanges fairly even LX began to threaten down the right with Richard Clarke and Angus Brogden combining well. From one of these early raids LX moved into the lead when a loose ball in front of goal was touched home by John Land. Unfortunately, Mike Patton strained a hamstring and was unable to continue and LX were forced to adjust. With Reivers finding their wingers in space the LX defence was kept busy and Reivers levelled when a crisp shot from close in gave Alan Dures no chance. Maintaining the pressure, Reivers moved ahead tucking home a cross from the right. LX were then unlucky not to equalise as half time approached when a cross from the right was deflected on to the post and the defenders were able to clear.
With Reivers adjusting to nullify the threat posed by the LX right, the LX midfield trio of Peter Danson, Ray Jeff and Richard Clarke were finding more space and feeding the ball through to the forwards. LX then levelled the scores when a well worked corner routine found John Land doubling his tally, sweeping home on the left hand post. Moving into the final quarter, both sides were looking to steal a winner. As Reivers pushed forward, LX were able to launch a quick counter and from Richard Clarke’s cross, Bill Warrender got ahead of the onrushing ‘keeper to steer the ball home. With time running out, LX could have extended the margin but were denied by goalline clearances by the Reivers defenders.
Once again the northern hospitality was of the highest order and David Ewing thanked our hosts for 2 very enjoyable days. A convivial evening was spent at the Gosforth Park Hotel on Wednesday evening when the squad entertained their ladies and were joined by Jim and Anne Standish.
