LX Athens June 2011
Sunday 5 June
SGM England LX 3
De Zestigplussers (Dutch Over 70s)
Having beaten the Germany Over 70s two days previously, a
draw would have been enough to win the tournament, but the LX excelled
themselves to win comfortably by 3 goals to nil.
In the Olympic Stadium on pitch 1 at 9.30 am it
was already another very hot day, but the SGM LX got off to a brilliant start
with 2 goals in the first quarter. Peter R, who had made a run across the
circle, received a short pass from Peter D, then beat the keeper with a
well-taken hit. Minutes later, Tony made a long pass to Keith, who skilfully
deflected the ball into goal from just outside the near post.
second quarter, from a short corner, Tony injected to receiver Peter D who
dummied left then reverse-passed to Percy who had lots of space to strike the
ball home just inside the right-hand post.
In the second half, LX kept up the
tempo, but further goals did not materialise.
All the team played really well
in the 4-3-3 formation, to fully deserve their success, with the defence really
solid and keeper Mike F only having to touch the ball twice, saving once in each
